"We never got a manual when we became parents". This is a statement we at Man Alive have heard so often from the growing number of men and women attending our parenting boys programmes.

While we suspect a comprehensive parents manual will never, or should never be written it is always a blessing to see someone contribute to the growing body of written work on parenting. It's a double blessing when a book like Bruce's appears taking such a practical perspective on the challenge of Fathering.

And hey it gets even better; we get to talk to the guy who wrote the book!

We warmly encourage you to come along, find out about the book, the man and us.

A little about the book...

FATHERING FROM THE FAST LANE has been written for men who want to be better fathers. It shows how busy men can find ways to give their children the time they need from their dads. Bruce Robinson, Professor of Medicine at the University of Western Australia is a busy man. He is a practicing lung specialist, leads a large team studying specific cancers, teaches medical students and attends international conferences. He also has three children, and he wanted to be a better father.

In writing FATHERING FROM THE FAST LANE, Bruce interviewed over 75 fathers (and many of their families), with occupations ranging from pig farmers, to the Prime Minister of Australia and more recently Peter Hillary son of Sir Edmund Hillary, to get their views on how they balance demanding jobs with being a good dad. Bruce has compiled this resource for men so that they might learn from the experiences of others, and become better fathers. The experiences of many men show that, if a little time and planning go into it, work can make better fathers and better fathering can help you in your work.

Bruce Robinson says, "Based on the ideas, experiences and mistakes shared in the interviews, I present to you a number of ideas and strategies for young dads. The goal is to increase the chances that our children will live happy and healthy lives..." He goes on to say, "I found that my own fathering improved because of the interviews. Before I started doing them I thought much more highly of my own fathering than afterwards. I realised there were a lot of things I could have done with (my children) that I did not do".

FATHERING FROM THE FAST LANE presents practical and straightforward ways for dads to make the best use of their limited time with their children.
